Madison BMW Club
What is this email list thing?
Email distribution to all
subscribers to MADISONBMW@micapeak.com facilitates
community communication. If you are a subscriber and send an email to this list,
all of the other subscribers will receive your message.
The name of our
email list is MADISONBMW and the intended use is to promote and further
communication amongst club members as well as any other visitor that wishes to
subscribe. The list is open to people that are not club members but is managed
by the Madison BMW Club with the intent of discussion of motorcyles and MC
events in the southern Wisconsin region. You will, however have to respect some
of our basic rules of etiquette if you want to stay on the list. While the list
is not moderated, the list manager will suppress any
subscriber that becomes overly verbose outside of the topical domain. Don't
worry! We'll ask you to cease and desist before clobering your subscription, but
appeals stop with the list manager (who has way too many years of experience in
this realm).

How do I subscribe?
There are two ways to do this. Novices to email
lists should follow this link to a
web page which is pretty darned self-explanatory. Select MADISONBMW and
use the Submit button. Put in your correct email address and name in the
New Subscriber section and then click the Subscribe button. That's
all you need to do. You should receive a verifying email indicating that you are
now a subscriber and will be able to send messages to the group as well as
receive them from the group.
The second way is for all of us that like to
live more complicated lives. Do you still like command-line entry computer
programs? Do you still insist upon using Word Perfect because you can see all of
the special codes? Have you ever "walked a MIB?" Uh-oh! I'm quickly headed out
of topic domain here BUT the point is that the software used to run this email
distribution list program is actually designed to be interacted with via email
and commands sent within the text of emails. The software used is called
ListProc and has been around since email began (and yes I do remember
what life was like BEFORE the Internet).
- The TO: field should use the address listproc@micapeak.com
- The Subject line should be blank
- The first line of text should read (the remaining text area MUST be clear,
empty, blank);
- subscribe MADISONBMW yourname
You can modify your subscription (using the email commands found here) to receive your list email in digest form (individual emails gathered into periodic messages to cut down on traffic). Please see this section) to view other commands or send an email to LISTPROC@micapeak.com with the word help as the only word in the text area.
How do I UNsubscribe?
- The TO: field should use the address listproc@micapeak.com
- The Subject line should be blank
- The first line of text should read (the remaining text area MUST be clear,
empty, blank);
- unsubscribe MADISONBMW
List etiquette for the MADISONBMW distribution list.
This is so
easy! Would you send it to your mom? Is it about motorcycles? Do you know how to
not offend people BY NOT YELLING AT THEM? Would your spouse approve of the
content you are sending?
Please avoid sending attachments. This makes
the software angry! Messages with attachments will be rejected and you will
receive an ERROR CONDITION response. Suggestion: if it is worth sharing
how about asking the editor if they want it for the next edition of the
newsletter?
Also watch out for those situations where you're leaving on
vacation and turn on your "out of office" message. The list admin will probably
turn off your subscription if a lot of bounced messages start getting sent to
the administrator simply because you are on the road someplace. You can remain a
subscriber but put a "stop" on your mail. See the section on mailing modes
(POSTPONE) in the FAQ
from Micapeak.
Vendors - please feel free to listen in and contribute
your personal thoughts etc but do NOT use this list to advertise (we appreciate
that).
More?
I am especially grateful to the folks at Micapeak (Marc & Carl) for granting us
access to the email distribution service. As I was digging around web sites
after buying my GS last February I found their site very useful and with
excellent links to many places in the Internet that are BMW-friendly. Please
note that their services do cost them time and money and on a yearly basis I
will be asking for donations to help them continue their mission of providing
communication tools to the MC community. Please visit their site.
If you
have any questions about the email distribution list please do contact
me!
